Can you combine Reiki with other therapies?
September 29, 2026Yes, in two ways: you can have a Reiki treatment, or you can learn to practise yourself. Neither removes grief, and we would not want to; it is part of us. What the system of Reiki does is help you keep moving through it rather than staying stuck, and the precepts give you a way to meet it each day.
We are talking about the system of Reiki here. You could have a Reiki treatment, or you could learn how to practise yourself. Those are two different things, and both would be very supportive of you in grief.
Grief is something we move through. We do not stay forever in grief. We can probably access it at any time if we want to, but we do not stay in it, because we are always shifting and changing. We never stay the same. You can never step into the same river twice.
Something like the system of Reiki can definitely help you move through that. It is not there to remove grief. We do not want to remove it; it is part of us, part of our history and our experience. But we do not want to be stuck in it.
A Reiki treatment is there to help you shift and move things, and so is a Reiki course, where you gain more self-awareness about what it means to feel that grief and what it might mean for you, especially in line with the precepts. For today only: do not anger, do not worry. Be grateful, be true to who you are, and be compassionate to yourself and to others.
When this happens. After a death, but also after a diagnosis, a divorce, a move, a miscarriage, the end of work. People often come to a first treatment months later, when everyone else has stopped asking how they are.
What is actually going on. Grief moves through the body as much as the mind: the chest, the throat, the belly. A treatment gives you space in which nothing is asked of you, and hands-on healing on yourself gives you a way to be with the feeling rather than around it.
What to do. If you practise: hands on the heart or the belly, morning and night, without trying to change anything, and remember the precepts. If you do not: book a treatment with someone who will allow you to be in the quiet healing space without pressure, and ask about learning when you are ready.
When to get help. If months pass and you cannot function, cannot sleep, or are thinking of harming yourself, that is beyond what a treatment or a practice is for. Speak to your doctor or a grief counsellor, and keep the practice or treatment alongside.
