What the Long Out-Breath in Reiki Practice Does to Your Nervous System
Six seconds out, four seconds in. A Japanese physician asked what a slow exhale does to the nervous system, and what a fast one does. The answers pointed in opposite directions, and they explain why NOW does what it does.
NOW, in the Shūyō App: press the blossom as you breathe in, let go as you breathe out. It follows your breath rather than setting a pace.
The study
One breath pattern to calm, one to arouse
The nervous system has two branches. The sympathetic prepares the body for action; the parasympathetic settles it for rest and repair. The balance between them can be read, indirectly, from moment-to-moment variation in the heartbeat. This small study asked whether simply changing the speed and shape of the breath would tip that balance.
Ten healthy men in their twenties breathed normally, then breathed with a prolonged exhalation, six seconds out and four seconds in. On a separate occasion they breathed normally, then rapidly, one second in and one second out. Throughout, heart rate variability was recorded and analysed for its high-frequency component, the part that reflects parasympathetic activity.

What they found
The exhale is the lever
Long out-breath, calmer system
During prolonged expiratory breathing, the parasympathetic branch was significantly activated compared with the person’s own normal breathing a few minutes earlier. Nothing else changed: same person, same chair, same day.
Fast breathing, the reverse
During rapid breathing, parasympathetic activity was significantly suppressed. The body read one-second breaths as a signal to prepare for something, and withdrew its brake. This is the breathing of anger and fear, and it keeps them going.
A larger trial agrees
A 2023 Stanford study of over a hundred people found that the breathing practice with the most emphasis on the exhale improved mood and lowered breathing rate more than mindfulness meditation over a month. Exhale-focused breathing keeps winning.
The out-breath is the part you have most control over, and it is the part the body listens to most closely.
Why NOW lengthens the out-breath, and why it never sets the pace
NOW is the part of The Shūyō App built for the moments this study describes: when someone says the thing, when the breath has gone short and fast without your noticing, and sitting down to practise is not possible. You press the blossom as you breathe in and let go as you breathe out. With each cycle the out-breath grows a little longer than the last. That is the six-second exhale of this study, arrived at gradually rather than imposed.
The gradual part matters. The men in this study were paced. NOW follows your own breathing instead, so the first out-breath is whatever it is, and the lengthening comes from you. There is nothing to keep up with and nothing to fail at, which is the right design for a body that has just been told, by a one-second breath, that something is wrong. One long exhale tells it otherwise. Then the day begins again.

Limitations
Small, short and honest about it.
- Ten men.Ten young, healthy men. No women, no older adults, no one under strain. The finding may hold more widely, but this study cannot show it.
- Minutes, not weeks. Each breathing pattern was held only briefly. This is a snapshot of an immediate response, which is what NOW is for, but it says nothing about a daily practice.
- Heart rate variability is an indirect measure. The author says so plainly. HRV reflects autonomic balance but does not measure the nerves themselves, and its interpretation is debated.
- A two-page report.Published as a brief communication with limited detail on methods. Useful, but a starting point rather than a settled result.
- Paced, not self-paced.Participants breathed to an instruction. NOW follows the user’s own breath. Whether a gradually lengthening, self-led exhale produces the same shift has not been tested directly.
- Calm was measured, not anger or fear. The study recorded nervous system balance in resting men. It did not test people who had just been provoked, which is the situation NOW is designed for.

This is research into breathing, not into Reiki, Reiki treatments or Reiki training. It is included here because breath is one of the foundation practices of the system.
Press as you breathe in. Let go as you breathe out. Let the out-breath take a little longer each time. One breath, and today begins again.
