Question. What is Byosen and did Mikao Usui actually teach it?

So byosen raikan ho means to sense imbalances or to sense illness in the body, and it is a scanning practice.

Now the Usui Reiki Ryōhō Gakkai, so the association in Japan, definitely teaches this, and also the student of Mikao Usui, Kajita, who wrote that book in 1933, he definitely taught it as well.

So we can assume that it was taught by Mikao Usui since his students also learned it and used it.

Now it's a scanning technique. I think in the West what's happened is that there were lots of scanning techniques that had nothing to do with the system of Reiki, and so people have brought in that idea from the West and people have brought in that idea from Japan as I was just saying, and I'm not sure that these are the same techniques or come from the same source, so keep that in mind.

But in Japan, yes, it is taught, and it's often taught with just the right hand. The left hand could be loose or slightly clenched, and you scan over the body sensing for phenomena. So sensing for an echo from the body of some sort of sensation, and that is the practice of biosen raikan ho.

Question. I told my doctor I do Reiki and she laughed. Oh, what do I say now? [laughter]

Well, there's lots of research out there. I've got heaps of Reiki research on my website. It's all explained in infographics to help you not have to read all those complicated research papers.

And you could print them off and next time you go to your doctor, take them with you and say, "Oh, I've got some light reading for you." That might be helpful. Give them a bit of a different perspective.

You know, when people are closed to something like this, then it is difficult to help them to shift and change because a doctor might be more science-based in their understanding. So, some science research might just be the thing to offer them.

As long as you're not saying, by the way, that you're wanting to use the system of Reiki instead of what they're offering because that's never going to go down well.

And also, I would like to think of the system of Reiki as something that works on well-being, and that's what most of the research is about.

Really listen to your doctor. Take what your doctor says as something serious. So, don't use the system of Reiki instead of what your doctor has said. But you can definitely use it as a complementary therapy, and maybe your doctor would like to learn a little more about that.

Question. What happens to your energy when you give Reiki to someone else?

Oh, well, are we giving Reiki to someone else? I would argue that little piece of that sentence there. I don't think we give Reiki to anybody because I'm Reiki, you're Reiki, we're in Reiki. We're not giving Reiki.

What I'm doing when I do a treatment is I am supporting you and your energy. Let's think of it this way. Say I'm doing a treatment. I go into this beautiful meditative space. Yeah.

And in my awareness is you. Yeah. So you've come for a treatment. And you—and by you I mean your body, your mind, your breath, the hara. Yeah. All of you, the whole of you—senses that energy, and you come and meet me in that space. Yeah.

So you're like, "Oh, I know that feeling. I love that feeling." It's like I'm supporting you in meditating, right? So I'm supporting you in your body coming into that healing space. And that's when you start to shift and move through things.

And, uh, I'm not really giving you Reiki. We're just really being in that energetic space together and being open to allow it to do what it needs to do to the body, or what it needs to do to us.
