Question. Is there a level four in the System of Reiki?

Well, um in some forms of the system, yes, there are.
If you were studying some western forms, they might teach you some things in level three and then they break it up so that it's level three and level four. Yep. But traditionally, No.

There was Shoden, Okuden, and Shinpiden. The association in Japan did break up Shoden and Okuden into different subheadings at different times, but there's no such thing as a level four as such.

But, you know, people do their own thing and they create their own thing. I've heard of there being like, I don't know, a 100 levels.

Question. What does ki actually mean in Japanese?

Well, I love this because it's a visual thing. Ki has the Japanese kanji for it, which is the picture of rice at the center, and the rice is inside a bowl. And from the rice cooking in the bowl, we can see the mist and the vapor coming off.

Now the mist and the vapor is the energy. But what's happening to that rice? It's being cultivated. It's being cooked. Yeah.

So we can see that as thinking about ki and our practice. What are we doing? We're working on ourselves. We are cultivating our own inner ki. We're strengthening our ki, our resilience.

And as we do so, then there's a greater amount of vapor and mist coming off our body—energy. Yeah.

So it's not about taking energy from anywhere or putting energy into anything. It's all about us and how we work with our own energy. That's ki.

Question. What is kenyoku ho and when should you use it?

Well, that's a really good question. So kenyoku ho is dry bathing. So that's where we do a practice where we physically cleanse ourselves. We're brushing through the energy lines in the body.

And it is actually representative of if you go to a temple in Japan. You know there's a long stick with a little water bowl at the end and you clean your hands. Yeah. And you do it twice on the left side and once on the right-hand side. The Japanese love using uneven numbers—odd numbers—and that means that there's still a vitality and a force available to the world by doing that.

The actual practice, when you should use it—well, I would say you could use it at any time. Obviously, it's a cleansing process, so it helps you feel fresh and renewed, like standing under a shower. That's why they call it dry bathing.

You know, that sense of renewal that you can have. Now you're not trying to disconnect yourself or connect yourself to anything. It's just giving yourself that lovely fresh feeling as if you've had a great shower.

Also, in Shinto practices of course they stand under waterfalls, and if we think of it in those terms, that is a challenge right because you're standing on uneven ground, you've got this heavy water coming down on top of you, and at the same time you are doing a practice of some sort. So you've got to be able to focus. It helps you to focus. This is bringing us into that space, if only symbolically.

You could do it at the beginning of a treatment, after a treatment. You could do it if you're feeling a little out of sorts. You could use it as a grounding technique. You could do it before our foundation meditation practice. You could do it before your own self practice, whether it's just hands-on healing. It's there for you to give you back that sparkle.
