Question. What is Joshin Kokyoho and why should every practitioner do it?

Well, I love this practice, and Joshin Kokyoho is a foundation meditation practice in the system of Reiki, obviously from a Japanese perspective. You can tell that by the name Joshin Kokyoho, a Japanese name, and it means to purify the mind with the breath.

So, when we breathe in, we breathe in and down into the hara. So, into the deep belly. And by doing so, we take the mind with us down into the hara.

And then, as we breathe out, we release our awareness and the breath out into the world. So, we're taking our mind down into the hara and releasing our awareness. [music]

So, our mind, but it has gone through this process of sitting with that original energy at the hara in our body and then releasing that awareness out into the world. The awareness that we have that actually helps us to understand that we are one with the world, that we are the small universe in the greater universe.

What is Joshin Kokyu Ho?

Reiki with Bronwen | Coaching • Q&A • Podcast 7 hours ago

Question. What is the Japanese word for a Reiki practitioner?

Such a good question. So, there are a couple of ways we could see this. We could say that a Reiki practitioner is a reiyōshi, and that is a person who practices a healing method, reiyō.

But there's another name that we could think of ourselves as. If we look at the memorial stone of Mikao Usui, he's said to have practiced kushu shin. Now, kushu shinren is a type of shugyō. And in Shinto, shugyō is an austerity practice, austerity training. So, a difficult practice. Yeah.

Now, I know that the system of Reiki, the idea is that it is for everybody. Yeah. And that [music] anybody can practice it. But it doesn't mean that we shouldn't have to work hard at it. And so someone who works at an austerity practice would be called a shugyōsha. And this is someone who is then committed to a path and practicing that path.

So maybe we should call Reiki practitioners shugyōsha. In the West, we have created a professional—how would you say—the identity around Reiki, and that would be that, you know, I'm a professional practitioner or a professional teacher. But if we were to look at it from a Japanese perspective and we were to think of this idea of shugyōsha, then it's really someone who is not that interested in certificates, much more interested in self-practice because it's about their own practice.

And it's about someone who is going to be practicing and committed to doing that hopefully every day. So, it's someone who really works hard at their own self-development. It's a commitment to a path.

What is the Japanese word for a Reiki practitioner?

Reiki with Bronwen | Coaching • Q&A • Podcast June 9, 2026 6:00 am

Question. What is the most misunderstood Reiki symbol?

H okay. Well, I'm going to say symbol and mantra here because it's also about that. I would say that it's probably the second one because in the West it was called, I think, the characteristic is mental and emotional healing.

But in Japan, the mantra for symbol two actually means our natural inclination. And our natural inclination is to be our true self. And if that's the case, then this practice is to actually take us to that space.

And the characteristic for it is considered to be harmony. When we come into balance between the earth and the heavens, there is a sense of harmony. [music] And in that harmonious space, we start to feel what our natural inclination truly is.
