Radiance Series: Teresa Morris, RN on Weaving Conventional and Complementary Bedside Care with Reiki Women Podcast
October 19, 2026Yes. Throw the rule book out; there are no rules, and you can practise at any time. This is usually a cultural question: in some cultures women do not do certain things while menstruating, and if that is your culture you may want to honour it. But as far as the system of Reiki is concerned, it makes no difference.
I think I have said often enough: throw that rule book out. There are no rules. You can practise Reiki at any time.
I think this might be a cultural question. In some cultures women do not do certain things when they are menstruating, so it would come down to that, and you might want to adhere to it if you come from that culture.
But as far as the system of Reiki is concerned, it does not matter.
When this happens. The question tends to come from students whose first teacher gave a list of don’ts, or from women whose families or religious traditions have rules around menstruation and who want to know whether the system of Reiki adds any.
What is actually going on. Nothing in the Japanese teachings mentions menstruation at all. The rule, where it exists, has been imported from somewhere else, often from ideas about energy being “low” or “impure”, neither of which belongs to the system.
What to do. Practise as usual. If you are tired or in pain, shorter sessions and more hands-on-the-belly self-practice are sensible for the same reason they would be on any tired day. If your own tradition asks something of you, that is yours to decide, and the practice will be there afterwards.
When to get help. This is not a medical question, but a practitioner who tells you your energy is unclean during your period is a reason to find another practitioner.
You might also ask: Is Reiki dangerous during pregnancy? · Can you give yourself Reiki while you sleep? · Can Reiki go wrong or cause harm?
No rules, but a great deal of practice: the Shūyō app.
