Does Reiki work on animals?
October 5, 2026Nothing is given, so nothing is lost. I am Reiki, you are Reiki, we are in Reiki. In a treatment I go into a meditative space with you in my awareness, and the whole of you, body, mind, and breath senses that space and comes to meet me in it. I am supporting you in your own healing space, not handing you my energy.
Are we giving Reiki to someone else? I would argue with that little piece of the sentence. I do not think we give Reiki to anybody, because I am Reiki, you are Reiki, and we are in Reiki. We are not giving Reiki.
What I am doing when I do a treatment is supporting you and your energy. Think of it this way: I go into a beautiful meditative space, and in my awareness is you, because you have come for a treatment. The whole of you, your body, your mind, your breath, the hara, senses that energy, and you come and meet me in that space. You think, oh, I know that feeling, I love that feeling.
It is as if I am supporting you in meditating. I am supporting your body in coming into that healing space, and that is when you start to shift and move through things.
So I am not really giving you Reiki. We are being in that energetic space together, open to letting it do what it needs to do.
When this happens. New practitioners ask this after feeling tired following a treatment, or after being told by another practitioner that they must protect themselves from a client’s energy.
What is actually going on. Tiredness after a treatment usually comes from effort: holding a posture, concentrating hard, trying to make something happen. It is the trying that drains you, not the client. A treatment done as meditation leaves you the way meditation does.
What to do. Before a treatment, Kenyoku Ho and a few minutes of Joshin Kokyu Ho; during it, keep your attention at the hara and let the client come into your awareness rather than reaching out to them; afterwards, Kenyoku Ho again and a glass of water. Notice whether the tiredness goes.
Ask your teacher this. “Do you feel drained after treatments, and what do you do about it?” A teacher who says never, and can explain why, is teaching the treatment as a meditation.
