What happens when a Reiki teacher gets sick?
October 26, 2026The ethical question is whether you can hold back from telling people about themselves. Anything a practitioner says about a client’s energy or their problems is subjective; really we are making it up to sound as though we know what we are doing, and we do not have to. Tell clients from the start that you do not diagnose or interpret. The treatment is the healing.
You know what I think this might be? It is having to hold back from telling people about themselves. When we do that, it is subjective, and really we are making things up to make it sound as though we know what we are doing. We do not have to do that, and that is the beautiful thing about this practice.
Better to tell your client from the beginning that you do not do that. You do not diagnose. You do not interpret. The treatment itself is the healing.
Let go of the pressure on yourself to be something more than you are. What makes the change for that person is the treatment. How you set it up is important, and that is what you actually say to someone before a treatment.
When this happens. At the end of a session, when the client sits up and asks, “So what did you feel? What’s wrong with me?” The temptation to answer is enormous, and the answer would be invented.
What is actually going on. Sensations during a treatment are the practitioner’s, not a reading of the client. Reporting them as findings turns a shared meditation into a fortune-telling, and it can frighten people or send them chasing problems they do not have.
What to do. Say before the session begins: “I don’t diagnose or interpret anything” Afterwards, if asked, say what you did, not what you found: “I kept my hands at your head and belly for a long time; how do you feel?” Then let them tell you.
Ask your teacher this. “What do you say when a client asks what you felt?” A teacher who has a careful answer has thought about ethics; one who tells you what they ‘found’ in you has not.

Setting up a treatment, and what to say before and after, is one of the most practical lessons inside Shinpiden+.
