What is kokoro?

Kokoro is the kanji for Heart and Mind as one — in Japanese, feeling and thinking are not separated. We call it the Mindful Heart. You’ll find it hiding inside these precepts: in shinpai (worry — a scattered kokoro), in kansha (gratitude — kokoro at its base), beneath ikaru (anger), and twice in the closing lines. In compound words it is read shin — as in shin shin kaizen, improving the Mindful Heart and body. When the Gokai asks you to kokoro ni nenji, it asks you to hold these words where feeling and thinking are one.
